Sunday Sessions: Painting with Daphne Mennell

February 28 - March 1, 2021

Yukon’s celebrated artist, Daphne Mennell, will be at Boréale for this special one night retreat. Spend time with your creative side, surrounded by beautiful original artworks and the magnificent Seven Sisters mountain range. Decompress and learn a new skill, just for you! Daphne will be on site to explain the basic techniques and help answer any questions you may have while you are painting.

Sunday, February 28, 2021 – At 1pm, come and get settled at the lodge and spend the afternoon with Daphne creating your art. After the session, spend the rest of the afternoon as you wish, taking time for yourself in the fresh mountain air! Relax, take a hot tub spa or walk through the property, rejoin the group for appetizers and dinner.

This afternoon course is an introduction to simple landscape painting in watercolours. You will go home with one or two finished small watercolour landscape sketches. To start you off I will guide you through a simple drawing exercise to help focus your attention and quickly teach you something about how to “see” artistically. This step aids us in seeing “composition” more easily.

We will then go over the photo you have brought to paint, or you can also choose to do the scene outside the window. We will go over what can make a good composition. Then step by step I will demonstrate some of the techniques you can incorporate into your painting.

You will need to bring:
– clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, an apron can help as well.
– Rags
– A few photos of some scene you might like to try painting
– A sense of humour

Monday, March 1, 2021 – Welcome to March! After breakfast with leisurely coffee, you may rejoin the painting station if you wish. Thank you for spending your time with Boreale!
